The Morris Island Lighthouse is a decommisioned relic of Charleston's history. When originally constructed the lighthouse was approximately 1,200 feet from the shoreline. Due to altered currents in the harbor that were a result of the creation of jetties to protect the shipping lanes errosion destroyed the existing buildings on the island. By 1938 the shoreline reached the lighthouse making it too dangerous for manned operation and became automated.
